This piece pairs two traditional English folk songs: Blacksmith Came Courting and Annachie Gordon. Although they are stylistically very different, they both tell stories of love, betrayal and loss.

Beltaine is the Pagan holiday celebrated on May 1, commonly known as May Day. On this day, approximately halfway between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice, revelers light a large bonfire and make merry late into the night.This piece evokes the revelry and playfulness of this celebration.

Anne Bonny and Mary Read were two female pirates in the seventeenth century. They both posed as men and served under Captain Jack "Calico" Rackham. Presented in the style of an overture, this song brings to mind the era of swashbucklers, from lonely paeans to the sea to heated ship battles.

Picking up where Bonny/Read left off, this suite of songs takes some of those themes and further develops them. This work was awarded Honorable Mention in 2012 as part of the Humboldt State University Brass Chamber Music Composition Contest.
